Grammar Summary: Articles with Superlatives

Use THE with superlatives when:

  • There is an explicit or implied comparison group: "the tallest building in the city"
  • Referring to something as the extreme in its category: "the most beautiful painting"
  • The superlative is followed by a noun: "the best solution"

Cases where no article is possible:

  • When the superlative is used predicatively without a following noun: "This solution is best" (though "the best" is also correct)
  • With possessive pronouns: "my best friend" (not "my the best friend")
  • In some fixed expressions: "at best", "at worst"

Special Notes:

With adverbs: "She runs (the) fastest" (both versions are correct)

With "first," "last," "next": "the first time," "the last day," but "- next week"
